How to Get 7 Band in IELTS Reading: Proven Tips for 2026

IELTS Academic Reading is 60 minutes, 40 questions across 3 passages โ€” and it is the section most Indian students underperform on, despite being strong English readers. The reason is almost always strategy, not language ability. This guide gives you the exact techniques that take Indian students from band 6.0 to 7.0+ in 4โ€“6 weeks of focused practice.

Understanding the Scoring: What Does Band 7 Require?

Band ScoreCorrect Answers Needed (out of 40)
9.039โ€“40
8.537โ€“38
8.035โ€“36
7.533โ€“34
7.030โ€“32
6.527โ€“29
6.023โ€“26

๐Ÿ’ก Key Insight: To score band 7.0, you need to answer approximately 30โ€“32 out of 40 questions correctly. That means you can afford to get 8โ€“10 questions wrong while still scoring 7.0. This changes how you should approach time management.

The IELTS Reading Question Types (and which matter most)

  • True/False/Not Given (TFNG) โ€” 10โ€“13 questions; most difficult for Indian students; requires precise reading
  • Yes/No/Not Given โ€” similar to TFNG but for opinions/claims
  • Matching Headings โ€” match section headings to paragraphs; tests overall comprehension
  • Matching Information โ€” find which paragraph contains specific info
  • Multiple Choice โ€” 3 or 4 options; often has tricky distractors
  • Short Answer Questions โ€” give 1โ€“3 word answers from the text
  • Sentence Completion โ€” fill in gaps; use exact words from text
  • Summary/Diagram Completion โ€” complete a summary using words from passage
  • Matching Features โ€” match features to categories (e.g., scientists to findings)

Time Management: The 20-Minute Rule

You have 60 minutes for 3 passages. The standard advice is 20 minutes per passage. But passages get progressively harder. Use this allocation instead:

PassageDifficultyRecommended Time
Passage 1Easy15 minutes
Passage 2Medium20 minutes
Passage 3Hard22 minutes
Review / transfer answersN/A3 minutes

Skimming vs Scanning: Use the Right Technique

Most Indian students make the mistake of reading every word โ€” this kills your time. Use two distinct techniques:

  • SKIMMING: Read only the first sentence of each paragraph + any bold/italic text. Do this for Matching Headings and paragraph-level questions. Should take only 3โ€“4 minutes per passage.
  • SCANNING: Search for specific words, numbers, names, or dates. Do this for Short Answer, Sentence Completion, and True/False/Not Given. Target: find the relevant paragraph in 20 seconds.
  • DO NOT read the full passage first โ€” skip straight to the questions and locate answers in the text.

True/False/Not Given: The Biggest Trap

TFNG is where most Indian students lose 2โ€“3 extra marks. The key rules:

  • TRUE: The passage explicitly states what the question says (or logically implies it)
  • FALSE: The passage explicitly contradicts what the question says
  • NOT GIVEN: The information is simply not mentioned anywhere in the passage
  • Do NOT use your general knowledge โ€” only what the passage says matters
  • NOT GIVEN is the most common wrong answer โ€” when in doubt, ask: "Does the passage say ANYTHING about this?" If no, choose NOT GIVEN
  • Statements always appear in the order they appear in the passage

๐ŸŽฏ TFNG Trick: Underline the key noun and key qualifier in the question. For example: "Scientists BELIEVE the species WILL become extinct by 2030." Then find the sentence in the passage and check: (1) Is it scientists or researchers? (2) Is it "will" or "may"? Any difference in qualifier often means FALSE.

Matching Headings: A Step-by-Step Approach

  1. 1Read all the headings before reading any paragraph (30 seconds)
  2. 2For each paragraph, read only the FIRST sentence and the LAST sentence
  3. 3Identify the main TOPIC (not detail) of the paragraph
  4. 4Match to the heading that covers that main topic โ€” not a supporting detail
  5. 5Cross out headings you have used (there are always more headings than paragraphs)
  6. 6Skip any paragraph you are unsure about and come back โ€” do not spend more than 90 seconds on one match
