Germany is the only major developed country offering tuition-free education at public universities — even to international students. With no tuition fees (only a semester contribution of €150–350), Germany is the most affordable high-quality study destination for Indian students in 2026. But the visa process has specific requirements that trip up many applicants. Here's how to get it right.
What Type of Visa Do You Need?
- National Visa (Type D) — for stays over 90 days. This is what you need for a degree program.
- Apply at the German Embassy / Consulate General in India (New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru)
- Validity: Initially 3 months to enter Germany; converted to a Residence Permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) at the Ausländerbehörde after arrival
Step 1: APS Certificate (Mandatory for Indian Students)
Since 2021, ALL Indian students applying to German universities or for a German student visa must obtain an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate. APS verifies the authenticity of your Indian educational documents. Without it, universities will not issue admission, and the embassy will not issue a visa.
- 1Register at the APS India website (aps-india.de)
- 2Submit academic documents (marksheets, degree certificates, school leaving certificate)
- 3APS verifies authenticity with your university/board
- 4Attend in-person interview at APS office (New Delhi or Chennai)
- 5Receive APS certificate — takes 4–8 weeks from submission
- 6Cost: ₹18,000 (approx), paid online
⚠️ Start APS early: The APS process takes 4–8 weeks. If you plan to start in Winter Semester (October), begin APS by April. For Summer Semester (April), start APS in October the prior year.
Step 2: Apply to German Universities
German universities operate on two intakes: Winter Semester (October–March) and Summer Semester (April–September). Most Master's programs only start in Winter Semester. Apply through the university portal or uni-assist.de (for institutions using the centralised application system). Deadlines are typically 15 July for Winter Semester.
Step 3: Open a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)
The blocked account (Sperrkonto) is mandatory for the German student visa. You must deposit €11,904 (as of 2026 — updated annually by the German government) into a blocked account. This amount represents 12 months of living costs (€992/month). Every month after arrival, €992 is released to your German bank account.
| Provider | Setup Time | Approximate Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fintiba | 3–5 days | €89 setup + €4.9/month | Most popular, fully online |
| Deutsche Bank (expatrio) | 1–2 weeks | €89 one-time | Bank-backed |
| Coracle | 3–5 days | €79 setup | No monthly fees |
| X-Patrio | 3–5 days | €29 setup | Budget option |
Step 4: Documents for the Visa Application
- APS certificate (mandatory)
- University admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid)
- Blocked account confirmation (proof of €11,904 deposited)
- Valid passport + copies of all previous passports
- Completed visa application form (online at videx-elias.diplo.de)
- Biometric passport photo (3.5×4.5 cm, white background)
- Health insurance certificate (German public health insurance or recognized private plan)
- Academic certificates and marksheets
- Language proficiency: German (B2/C1 for German-taught programs) or English (IELTS 6.5 for English programs)
- Motivation letter / statement of purpose
- CV (Europass format recommended)
- Proof of accommodation in Germany (if available)
Step 5: Book Your Embassy Appointment
Appointments at the German Embassy and Consulates in India are in high demand — especially Mumbai and New Delhi. Book your appointment as soon as you have your admission letter and blocked account confirmation. In peak season (May–July), appointments can be booked 6–8 weeks in advance.
🎯 Tip: Check the German Embassy appointment portal daily — cancellation slots open up regularly. Set an early morning alarm as new slots are often released at midnight.
